A CABIN IN THE WOODS

Deep in the trees, there you are, standing before a cabin in the woods. The mysterious building that is seemingly abandoned entices you to come inside, leading you to its frights.

After just getting back from my Disney College Program, with 2 months until opening day, I had to come up with a design for the interior of the cabin while implementing a new show control system . This was a challenge as prior to being a cabin, it was a "mad scientist" lair. With my creative and artistic abilities, I was able to finish this project ahead of schedule.

BEFORE

AFTER

Prior to the remodel, the cabin was a "mad scientist" lair.
I was capable of creating a whole new environment within the same space, transporting our guests into a new story that included new sights, smells, textures, lighting, and sounds.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Each aspect of the set conveys a story. While being in charge of set decor and lighting, I was able to tell that story through props, selectively lighting the most important story centric features.

CABIN FIREPLACE

Due to budget constraints, I was unable to purchase a prebuilt fireplace that would fit the aesthetic of the room. This led me to having to be creative. I was able to obtain an old fireplace that fit within our budget, and then sculpted it to appear as if it was a completely different fireplace.

First, I found a fireplace that fit within the budget constraints.

Next, I covered the exterior in 2" foam, carving away to create the look of stone.

After, I covered it in a hard coat and painted a mixture of primer and sand for a base coat. The sand added a rock like texture that helped to sell the look and feel of stone.

Finally, I added detail painting and aging. As a cherry on top, I made a mantel that gave a hint as to what this fireplace used to look like.

RESULTS

The work I did for the Duluth Haunted Ship was seen nation wide through media coverage.  The Haunted Ship had a record setting attendance for this season.
All I want you to think about is when people walk through or have access to anything you design, I want them, when they leave, to have smiles on their faces. Just remember that. It’s all I ask of you as a designer."
